  3. ATTENDANCE: Twenty-eight persons attended, of which 20 were association members, and eight were spouses and guests.

a. General: Meeting convened at 0930, and everyone was welcomed into fellowship

b. Announcements:

  • Killed in Action:
    • SSgt Bryan D. Berky, 12 Sep. 2009, near Bala Baluk, Afghanistan during fire fight.
    • Wounded in Action:
    • TSgt Michael Williams, 2 Aug. 2009, Afghanistan; struck by IED blast.
    • SrA Bren Mejia, 2 Aug. 2009, Afghanistan; struck by schrapnel in above blast.
    • TSgt Richard Gibbons, 18 Sep. 2009, Afghanistan; vehicle struck by IED.
    • SrA Robert Flick, 18 Sep. 2009, Afghanistan; vehicle struck by IED.
  • Final Shots:
    • Charles A. Free, RDE-558, 1 Aug. 2009, long fight with cancer.
    • Frank J. Szymuleski, RDE-023, 15 Sep. 2009, cause unknown.
    • James W. Carpenter, LRDE-158, 17 Sep. 2009, cause unknown.

Following the reading of the above Jack McMasters offered a prayer of support for all.

  • General:
    • EOD Wounded Warrior TSgt “Matt” Slaydon, LR-752, retired 28 Aug. 2009.
    • 2010 3rd Creek EOD Gathering (details attached). • Request for Supplies (details attached).
    • 2010 EOD Memorial Ceremony and Ball: 1 May 2010, with auction on evening of 30 Apr. 2010.
    • Does anyone know the whereabouts of Kenneth Niblick? Mike Hare is trying to locate him.

c. Old Business:
(1) Minutes of the 18 Jul. 2009 Regular Meeting. Minutes were read and discussed. A motion was made, seconded, and carried to approve the minutes as read. (CLOSED)

Following the reading of the treasurer’s report a motion was made, seconded and carried to approve the report as presented. (CLOSED)

(3) Membership Status Report: (as of 30 Sep. 2009).
(a) Active Membership Totals: Lifetime: 285; Associate: 22; Charter: 114; Regular: 334; Surviving Spouse: 120; Corporate: 6; for a total of 881 members. (CLOSED)

(4) Committee Reports:
(a) Outreach Committee: During the period 1 Jul. – 30 Sep. 2009, the association expended $2,605.99, for charitable donations in memory of fallen members, families of Air Force EOD KIA, support for wounded warriors, and numerous flower and plant arrangements and cards that were sent as support to members and member spouses who found themselves in distress during this period. (CLOSED)

(b) 2008 Reunion Report: Jack McMasters reported attendance is down from past years. We have 125 attendees so far and hoping for at least 150. There will be a tour of the new EOD facility at Eglin. We will car pool for this event. Eglin will host lunch at their new facility. We need to get in your reservations so planning can be completed. Bombs Away and Da Bomb will be located on the 6th floor in the main dining area. We will hold auction and raffle activity. (CONTINUING)

(c) Association Building Committee Report: Jack McMasters reported construction is moving along and while the donations have been generous, more donations are needed. He also reported that he meets with the contractor every Friday for a construction update. (CONTINUING)

d. New Business:
(1) Election of officers will be held at the January 2010 meeting. Roger Hollen was appointed as the chairman of the election nominating committee. (OPEN)

e. Open Discussions:
(1) Chief Hodges reported that the EOD display at the Enlisted Heritage Hall, Montgomery, AL, is almost finished with the exception of the graphics. He asked that if anyone is interested there is a need to spend some time with Montgomery personnel with regard to putting the EOD history together.

f. “Half & Half” Raffle. Raffle total came to $90.00, of which $45.00 was won by Eleanor Davis who graciously donated her winnings back to the BEF.

g. Adjournment Activities:
(1) Location/Time of Next Meeting: The next meeting was scheduled for 16 Jan. 2010 at 0900, at Ryan’s Grill Buffet & Bakery, 3000 S Ferdon Blvd (US 85), Crestview, Fla.
(2) Motion to Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and carried to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 1100.
